Why Contraction Joints Matter in Cast-in-Place Canal Lining

Concrete shrinks as it cures, and restrained shrinkage produces tensile stress. Without planned weakening planes, the lining cracks wherever the stress happens to concentrate — usually irregularly and often through the full thickness.

Contraction joints create deliberate, straight weaknesses so cracking occurs in predictable, manageable locations. Spacing depends on lining thickness, concrete mix, subgrade restraint and local climate.

Practice points: cut joints as early as the concrete allows without tearing the surface, maintain consistent spacing, and seal joints where the lining must limit seepage.
